A Historic Landmark Facing Hotel Terrado Arturo Prat

Traveling also means connecting with and experiencing the destination. And in Iquique, one of the best places to begin feeling the city is right in front of the Clock Tower at Plaza Arturo Prat, an icon that has marked the rhythm of the historic district and everyday life since the late 19th century. It was built in 1877 and inaugurated in 1879, with its mechanism imported from England, according to the official record published by Chile’s National Monuments Council, the institution that safeguards its status as a Historic Monument.

Located in the heart of the city center, surrounded by heritage buildings, cafés, museums, the banking district, and historic hotels such as our Hotel Terrado Arturo Prat, the clock is much more than a postcard. It is a natural meeting point that offers shade, history, and the perfect backdrop for those exploring the city at their own pace, walking without rush or letting themselves be surprised by every heritage detail.

Architecture and Saltpeter-Era Symbolism

The tower was built in 1877, when Iquique was still Peruvian territory, during the height of the saltpeter boom, and its design is attributed to engineer Manuel Eduardo Lapeyrouse.

It is built with Oregon pine wood and reaches approximately 25 meters in height. It features pointed arches on all four sides and combines Gothic and Islamic Mudéjar elements in its ornamentation, as highlighted by Chile’s National Monuments Council.

The clock mechanism, brought from England in 1878, was an innovation for its time. Its four faces have witnessed historical changes, celebrations, and generations of travelers who have stopped to admire it, according to publications on Iquique’s urban modernization during the saltpeter period.

Today, visiting the Clock Tower at Plaza Prat is an experience best enjoyed at a slow pace.

It is the ideal place to begin a walk through the historic center, visit the Municipal Theater, the Regional Museum, or simply sit in the square and observe daily life: residents chatting, tourists taking photos, and the sea breeze blending with the sounds of the city, in an area that forms part of the city’s Historic Conservation Zone, according to current heritage planning instruments.

The Curious Numbering: Why the Number 4 Appears as “IIII”

If you look closely at the faces of the Clock Tower at Plaza Prat, you will notice that the number four is represented as “IIII” instead of “IV,” a common convention in many monumental and tower clocks of Western tradition.

In the case of this clock, whose mechanism was manufactured in England in the 19th century, this choice follows classic principles of monumental clockmaking, where clear and balanced readability of the numerals was prioritized on faces designed to be seen from a distance, according to historical clockmaking studies cited by specialized museums such as the Seiko Museum.

Although the modern Roman numeral system uses “IV” as the subtractive form, many clockmakers maintained “IIII” for aesthetic and legibility reasons, a practice documented in public clocks installed in port cities during the industrial period, especially those designed to be viewed from different angles and heights.

Historically, the use of “IIII” also dates back to earlier practices of the original Roman numeral system, closer to additive notation, and remained present in medieval and modern European clockmaking. This tradition was inherited by British manufacturers of tower clock machinery, such as the mechanism installed at Plaza Prat in Iquique, according to historical treatises on Roman numerals and monumental clockmaking.

Because when you choose to stay in the heart of the city, you do more than rest: you become part of the history that continues to mark time right in front of the Clock Tower at Plaza Prat.
